Event Takeaway: Public Space Design

Event Takeaway

31/01/2019

Our event takeaways are compiled into a useful booklet that summarises our year’s events and offer a useful glimpse into the excellent ideas, wonderful examples and challenging propositions we have enjoyed. You can visit our Resource page to download a copy of past Takeaways.

Here are the main takeaways from our Public Space Design event:

  • Trees and plants offer more than just visual amenity. They provide a variety of economic, social and environmental benefits such as improving air quality, increasing biodiversity and improving physical and psychological health.

  • Get the funding you need to make sure your green spaces are well maintained. Natural Capital Accounting assesses the economic value of open spaces, by quantifying the benefits of these natural assets. This can help unlock funding.

  • Don’t be afraid to create public spaces that surprise and delight. Provide spaces for play. This will promote wellbeing for children and benefit adults through increasing activity and social interaction.

  • Make the journey easy. Good quality interchanges can encourage the use of public transport and make spaces feel welcoming and safe. Consider desire lines when designing new transport interchanges to provide direct, uncluttered routes where people want to go.

  • Involve the community and use co-design your scheme from the outset. Find out what they need and discuss the art of the possible and how their concerns will be dealt with.
