  • Small sites and infill sites have an increasingly important role to play in London’s growth. They are an opportunity to plan creatively for neighbourhoods and boroughs.
  • Be a good neighbour. Ensure that infill sites positively respond to a neighbourhood’s character and don’t forget to bring the community along with you when exploring potential development opportunities.
  • Temporary sites can have long-term benefits. The PLACE collaborative programme plans to deliver new modular housing on meanwhile sites for homeless families, starting in LB Tower Hamlets. The aim is to improve the quality of supply and make temporary accommodation available to boroughs at a lower cost.
  • If in doubt, refer to the basics of good housing. Themes of Good Housing, from The Housing Design Handbook, include privacy & communality, well designed, shared spaces and flexible layouts. Also ensure the site layout maximises daylight and sunlight.
  • Quality housing and good health are closely linked. It’s no co-incidence that the National Housing Design Awards were set up the same year as the NHS, more than 70 years ago. Create places that are walkable, people friendly and encourage different uses to make our city more sustainable and enjoyable.
