Our National Programme for built environment officers and councillors across England covers planning, housing, public realm, streets and transport topics.  The sessions provide an opportunity for those influencing and managing the built environment to meet, share ideas and discuss best practice.

Corona Virus - In light of Public Health England's guidance on Coronavirus (COVID-19) (found here), our March and April events will no longer be conducted in physical, face-to-face settings. Audio-described PowerPoint Presentations by our speakers will be made available to those booked on so please continue to sign up. We are looking at how we can run more interactive sessions and will keep you updated as this progresses. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

A useful introductory/refresher session looking at placemaking and urban design; covering current policy drivers, how to embed good design in local authorities, and understanding the important elements that contribute towards good housing and street design.  This will be a practical session including a site visit and a discussion on the challenges to delivering well designed places.

Subscribing members have access to in-house sessions to deal with specific training or design quality management challenges.

Example sessions include:

  • Introduction to urban design - training for your planning, housing and highway teams
  • Facilitated discussion with Councillors and chief officers on how your authority can best manage and deliver design and place quality
  • Feedback on your draft design policies or guidance documents
  • How to successfully involve communities
  • Introduction to drawing and reading plans
  • Creating a walkable neighbourhood

Subscribing members can also attend specialised events in our London Programme. We run sessions on higher density housing, understanding viability and designing cycle facilities, to name a few.
